PHOTOS: 1. In Cherbourg, passengers were tendered to Titanic (first-class on SS Nomadic), as the ship was too big to fully dock. 2. According to testimony given afterward, at approximately 11:40 p.m April 14, 1912 about 400 nautical miles (740 km) south of Newfoundland, Canada, an iceberg was sighted, and the bridge was notified. First Officer William Murdoch ordered both the ship “hard-a-starboard” (to the right) and the engines reversed. The Titanic began to turn, but it was too close to avoid a collision. By reversing the engines, Murdoch actually caused the Titanic to turn slower than if it had been moving at its original speed. Most experts believe the ship would have survived if it had hit the iceberg head-on. 3. There were stark differences in the survival rates of the different classes aboard Titanic. Although only 3 percent of first-class women were lost, 54 percent of women in third-class died. Similarly, five of six first-class and all second-class children survived, but 52 of the 79 in third-class children perished. 4. Stateroom B-59 5. Bernice Palmer took this picture of the iceberg identified by survivors aboard Carpathia as the one which sank Titanic. 6. Less than a third of those aboard Titanic survived the disaster. Some survivors died shortly afterwards; injuries and the effects of exposure caused the deaths of several of those brought aboard Carpathia. 7. Photograph taken by unknown photographer, a passenger aboard Carpathia. 8. The 705 survivors were suffering from exposure, extreme stress and shock by the time Carpathia arrived on the scene. 9. The Movie
A quick reminder of the plot: In 1996 Brock Lovett is on the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, a Russian scientific research vessel, exploring the wreck of the Titanic, hoping to find a necklace known as the Heart of the Ocean. They recover a drawing of a young Rose DeWitt Bukater wearing the necklace. Rose Dawson Calvert is brought onboard by Lovett, along with her granddaughter, where Rose recounts her experience aboard the Titanic… In 1912, 17 year old Rose boards Titanic with her wealthy fiancee, Cal Hockley. Feeling trapped by this loveless marriage arrangement, Rose contemplates suicide at the bow of the ship, but is saved by third-class artist Jack Dawson. They fall in love, Rose asks Jack to sketch her naked wearing only the necklace… a jealous Cal has Jack locked up and Rose has to find and free him after the ship hits an iceberg and is about to sink.
